How a Form brand sprint is helping Almanac build an indispensable knowledge base for professionals

Almanac is building a collaborative, version-controlled document editor for teams. Through our sprint process, Form has worked alongside the founders and product team at Almanac to define their visual brand identity, design several product flows, and develop a foundation for their UI component library.

We helped define a natural and inviting color palette, appropriate for both brand and product use, and we led Almanac through the process of selecting Publico Headline as their primary brand typeface. It is a unique and elegant choice in a sea of enterprise sans serif type.

During our brand sprint — a process that begins with a half-day founders session — we learned more about Almanac's goals, values, and core audiences. We also identified a dozen or so complimentary or competing products, noting how each presented and positioned their visual identity.

This process helped us define a personality for Almanac’s brand, an approachable and tailored perspective on collaborative professional docs. We quickly identified common industry patterns, such as the predominant usage of the color blue and sans serif type, and then made conscious decisions to navigate around specific visual ruts.

Search UI explorations

In addition to their brand, Almanac also asked Form to collaborate on specific product flows, including its search results UX. Component designs for public documents, team templates, and personal profile results were explored and considered in light of a variety of possible use cases. This UX shipped to production in 2020.

Text editor elements

While publishable templates, a community platform, and version control help set Almanac apart, at its core it’s still a text editor. Form worked with Almanac to apply its visual identity and typography standards to a broad collection of text elements featured by the product. Form also worked with Almanac to lay the foundation for a collaborative team design process. We advised on the architecture of their Figma design projects, shared color and typography styles, and published component libraries. These efforts empower Almanac to prototype faster and ship with greater consistency.

Form continues to support Almanac today through design reviews, critiques, and sourcing.
